Immunization

California school immunization law requires that all children entering school receive proper immunizations to protect them from serious illness and to prevent the spread of communicable diseases including polio, measles, rubella, mumps, hepatitis B, varicella (chickenpox), diphtheria, tetanus, haemophilus influenza type b (Hib meningitis), and whooping cough.

A child shall not be registered until documentation showing current immunizations is presented to the school unless proof of homeless. If there is a documented medical reason for exemption, or if immunizations are against one's personal beliefs, please consult with school personnel.

To enter or transfer into public and private elementary or secondary schools (grades kindergarten through 12), children under age 18 years must have immunizations as outlined below.

  1. Polio:
    • 4 doses at any age, but... 3 doses meet requirements for ages 4-6 if at least one was given on or after the 4th birthday; 3 doses meet requirements for ages 7-17 years if at least one was given on or after the 2nd birthday.
  2. Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DPT):

Is your child ready for kindergarten?

Chickenpox (varicella) vaccine now is required by California law for kindergarten entry. If your child has not had a chickenpox shot, see your doctor or clinic.  DTaP (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus), Polio, Hepatitis B and MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) immunizations are also required for school entry. Your child needs school boosters after his or her 4th birthday.

You must show proof of immunization, such as the yellow California Immunization Record, to register your child. Check with your doctor or clinic about the shots needed for school.  The following is required for enrollment to Kindergarten.
