West Covina Unified School District is pleased to offer a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program. Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a two-year program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. A child is eligible for Transitional Kindergarten if he or she has a birthdate falls between October 2, 2008 to December 2, 2008.

California Senate Bill 1381 was recently passed which moves up the Kindergarten entry date by one month per year through 2014 beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. The Bill also stipulates that there be a Transitional Kindergarten program for students who turn five between November 2 and December 2, 2012. Transitional Kindergarten is an early childhood education program that builds a bridge between preschool years and traditional Kindergarten. It is the first of a two-year Kindergarten program that uses a modified curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate.
Unfortunately, there is a possibility that Transitional Kindergarten, created by California Senate Bill 1381, will not be funded nor mandated for the 2012-2013 school year according to the Governor’s budget proposal released in January 2012. Depending on the outcome of the budget decision, we can expect one of the following scenarios:

We realize this uncertainty may be difficult for parents making educational plans for their children. As soon as the state gives us clear direction, additional information will be provided.
La Propuesta de Ley del Senado 1381 aprobada recientemente, adelantará la fecha de entrada al kínder un mes por año hasta 2014 comenzando el año escolar 2012-2013. La propuesta también estipula que exista un programa de Kínder de Transición para estudiantes que cumplan cinco años entre el 2 de noviembre y el 2 de diciembre del 2012. Kínder de Transición es un programa de educación infantil que construye un puente entre los años prescolares y kínder tradicional. Es el primero de dos años de kínder que usará un currículo modificado y apropiado a la edad y desarrollo de los niños.
Desafortunadamente, conforme al presupuesto preliminar del Gobernador anunciado en enero del 2012, existe la posibilidad de que Kínder de Transición, creado por la Propuesta de Ley del Senado 1381, no será financiado ni bajo mandato para el año escolar 2012-2013.
