The Classified School Employee of the Year recognizes outstanding classified employees from each WCUSD school including the district office. On Tuesday, May 22, 2012, The Board of Education recognized Diana Phan of Business Services as WCUSD Classified School Employee of the Year. Chinese Delegates visit Edgewood
A delegation of teachers and school administrators from China visited the campus of Edgewood middle and high schools on Friday, May 4. Their goal was to learn more about the American educational system and find instructional techniques they can use back at their schools. The visit was also a rare opportunity for students and staff to learn about China. (additional photos)
A Walnut Grove Welcome
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson visits with students and staff of Walnut Grove Intermediate School as he made his way into the San Gabriel Valley on Wednesday, May 2. Later that day, he spoke at an education forum with local educators, school board members and area school district superintendents attending.
Promoting good health and fitness
Congratulations to our Monte Vista Mountain Lions who did a superb job at the Mt. San Antonio College Youth Relays this past Saturday (April 7)! Students won ribbons and all enjoyed the day with family and friends! A special congratulations to Mr. Nyron Bernard and Ms. Melissa Daley for their tremendous efforts in working with students in preparation for the relays and on the day of the event - Well Done! Ms. Julie Serna was also on hand to cheer our team to success! Way to go Monte Vista! (additional photos by B. Whitson)
Students from Vine Elementary participate in the parade of athletes during the Mt. San Antonio College Youth Relays held on April 7, 2012. Over 75 students take part in the after school track program at Vine with dedicated volunteers providing much needed support and encouragement. In addition to physical fitness, teacher/coach Ms. Cameron and Ms. Lau emphasize the importance of team work, good sportsmanship, proper nutrition, proper warm-up/cool down, as well as having fun. Vine Eagles, soaring to new heights!

Supporting Innovation in the classroom
A total of 13 WCUSD teacher projects were funded through the Rotary Club Teachers’ Mini-Grants Program this week. Cash grants up to $500 for special classroom projects were awarded to selected teachers to develop new ideas that enrich classroom experience for students. The funds were awarded to teachers who would not otherwise have sources of funding or who would have to use their own money to support the project.

Congratulations to WCHS student Meagan Manahan who received the 2012 Emerging Leader Award. In celebration of Women’s History Month, Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez honored Megan and other outstanding women who exemplify courage, strength and vision at the 2012 Women of Achievement Awards for the 24th Senate District. The awards ceremony took place at the Garvey Center on March 23, 2012 with friends, family and school representatives in attendance.
