Craig Michael, 2013 WCUSD Teacher of the Year

It is with pleasure that I announce the 2013 West Covina Unified Teacher of the Year, Mr. Craig Michael . Mr. Michael has taught in WCUSD for fifteen years, twelve at Edgewood Middle School and three at Edgewood High School. At both sites he has distinguished himself as a teacher and a leader. Craig has been instrumental in the development of the Edgewood High School program and the school’s certification as IB Diploma Program school. In addition to teaching IB English he has been the coach to the school’s very successful Academic Decathlon Team, is advisor to the Poetry Club, and represented his school on the district Strategic Plan Literacy Committee this year. In past years Craig provided support to colleagues as department chair and BTSA Support Provider. Mr. Michael’s professional expertise and efforts have contributed to the academic and social development of the many students he served over his career; to the progress of Edgewood Middle School in exiting program improvement status; and to the development of the new Edgewood High School. He is an extremely passionate educator who demonstrates every day his commitment to instill in his students a love of learning. Please join me in congratulating Craig Michael as our District Teacher of the Year. Mr. Michael will represent our district in the Los Angeles County Office of Education Teacher of the Year recognition and selection process. Debra Kaplan, Superintendent

Two West Covina High Schools named California Distinguished Schools

With a news release dated April 11, California Schools Chief Tom Torlakson announced that Edgewood High School and West Covina High School were among the 218 public secondary schools named California Distinguished Schools for 2013. Mr. Torlakson said, These schools have gone the extra mile to provide high-quality instruction that puts their students on the right path toward career and college. This is Edgewood's first CA Distinguished School Award while West Covina High School has previously received the award in 2005. As such, both schools agree to share their signature practices with other schools and become a mentor to those seeking to replicate their work. These Signature Practices along with those from other awardees will be available later this spring from the CDE website. The California Distinguished Schools Program identifies and honors schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap. In order to be eligible to apply for Distinguished School honors, schools must meet a variety of eligibility criteria including designated federal and state accountability measures based on Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), and the Academic Performance Index (API) requirements. Congratulations go to Edgewood High School and West Covina High School!
