Register Now: Transitional Kindergarten & Kindergarten

West Covina Unified School District is pleased to offer Transitional Kindergarten in response to legislation that changes the entry date for kindergarten students. Due to this change, some children will not be able to begin kindergarten as early as their families had planned. This year (2013), a student must be five (5) years old on or before October 1, 2013 in order to enter kindergarten. Those who turn five between October 2 and December 2 are eligible for Transitional Kindergarten which is a one-year program followed by a year of standard kindergarten. West Covina Unified School District welcomes families who are eligible to enroll for kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten. Registration for the 2013-2014 school year started on March 4, 2013 and the requirements include: proof of residency in the district (gas, water, or electric bill); proof of the child’s age (birth certificate, baptismal certificate, or passport), and, proof that the child has received ALL required immunizations for school entry. A health examination needs to be done before school begins in August 2013. California law requires that each child have an oral health assessment by May 31 in kindergarten or first grade, whichever is the child’s first year of public school. For more information, please visit the links below or contact Pupil Services office at 626-939-4600, ext. 4682.

Two West Covina High Schools named California Distinguished Schools

With a news release dated April 11, California Schools Chief Tom Torlakson announced that Edgewood High School and West Covina High School were among the 218 public secondary schools named California Distinguished Schools for 2013. Mr. Torlakson said, These schools have gone the extra mile to provide high-quality instruction that puts their students on the right path toward career and college. This is Edgewood's first CA Distinguished School Award while West Covina High School has previously received the award in 2005. As such, both schools agree to share their signature practices with other schools and become a mentor to those seeking to replicate their work. These Signature Practices along with those from other awardees will be available later this spring from the CDE website. The California Distinguished Schools Program identifies and honors schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap. In order to be eligible to apply for Distinguished School honors, schools must meet a variety of eligibility criteria including designated federal and state accountability measures based on Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), and the Academic Performance Index (API) requirements. Congratulations go to Edgewood High School and West Covina High School!
