Merced named National Blue Ribbon School

blueribbon.jpgEarlier this morning, the United States Department of Education named 304 schools across the country (18 in California) as National Blue Ribbon Schools and our very own Merced Elementary is among this year's elite group!  Considered as the highest honor for an American school, the National Blue Ribbon Award distinguishes schools for helping students attain and maintain high achievement levels and/or for demonstrating significant progress in closing the achievement gap.

“Receiving this very prestigious designation exemplifies the strength of the strong collaboration between Merced faculty, staff, administration, parents and students and their unwavering commitment to high academic achievement for all students," said Superintendent of Schools Debra Kaplan. "The Board of Education and I are extremely proud of their accomplishments.”

All award recipients met the federal and state accountability model and growth targets. School-wide, Merced posted student proficiency rates of 73.2% and 84.9% in English Language Arts and Mathematics respectively. Students in significant subgroups scored slightly below the school-wide results, but well above the target. With these numbers, Merced met all its Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) criteria and Merced scored 902 on this year's state Academic Performance Index (API), on which a score of 800 is considered excellent.

In addition to this national award, Merced Elementary is also a recipient of the California Distinguished School Award and the Title I Academic Achievement Award this year.
